Couples therapy, without the therapy-speak
Most couples don’t start with therapy. They try to talk it out. They try to “be more patient.” They try to stop bringing it up. Over time, the same issues keep resurfacing. Communication, trust, intimacy, parenting stress, or feeling like the relationship has changed and you don’t know how to get back to each other.
Couples therapy is a structured space to understand what’s happening between you and work on it in a practical way.
What couples therapy can help with
This work commonly includes communication and conflict, emotional closeness and sexual concerns, infidelity and rebuilding trust, LGBTQIA+ relationships and non-monogamy, and parenting-related relationship stress (including parenting a neurodivergent child).
Couples therapy isn’t about deciding who’s right. It’s about identifying the pattern you keep getting pulled into and building skills that help you respond differently when things get tense, painful, or stuck.
How the process usually works
Couples therapy often begins with an assessment phase. The first 1–3 sessions are typically used to understand your history, relationship dynamics, strengths, and the concerns bringing you in. After that, sessions move into skill-building and targeted interventions, and later maintenance if you continue.
Couples should expect that the total number of sessions often ranges from 4–12+, depending on the depth and complexity of what you’re working through.
Areas of focus
Communication and conflict resolution
When the same argument keeps returning, it’s usually not just “communication skills.” It’s a cycle. Couples therapy helps you slow it down, name it, and practise different ways of responding.
Infidelity / affair recovery
After a rupture in trust, couples often need support to talk about what happened in a way that doesn’t cause more harm. Therapy can help you sort through the impact, the questions, and what repair would require if you choose to pursue it.
Co-parenting stress and parenting-related relationship strain
Parenting can put a relationship under pressure. This can show up as resentment, conflict about responsibilities, burnout, and feeling like there’s no room left for the relationship itself. Therapy can help you address the relational impact, not just the logistics.
LGBTQIA+ relationships and non-monogamy
Therapy can support people in LGBTQIA+ relationships and people navigating relationship structure, boundaries, and agreements. The goal is clarity, honesty, and a workable path forward that matches your values.
Emotional intimacy and sexual concerns
Distance can show up emotionally, physically, or both. Therapy can support you in having clearer conversations about intimacy, desire, disconnection, and what each of you needs.
